Around 2,400 million people in the world use traditional biomass fuel to cook, while 1,600 million people lack access to electricity. Failure to increase access to affordable sustainable energy services not only means the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) will not be reached, but also that 1,400 million people will lack modern energy services by 2030. On the other hand, by improving access to these services, there is a greater likelihood of achieving the MDGs. Moreover, energy services have a multiplier effect on health, education, transportation, telecommunications, drinking water and sanitation, and investments in agricultural, industrial and tertiary sectors, both in income-generating activities and in productivity.
